Christmas Crackers

Christmas Crackers

There is one very special item that always adorns the Christmas table. The English Christmas cracker might be one of the most enduring traditions on Christmas day. The cracker is a small tube wrapped with a heavy foil Christmas wrapping paper. There is a cracker in front of each plate. You and the person sitting next to you will each grab one end of the cracker and then you will pull it apart. There is a small device inside the cracker which will make a loud “SNAP” as it is pulled apart. Inside the cracker, you will find three items. First of all, there will be a small toy such as a spinny top or a puzzle. You will also find a joke. Each person reads his joke aloud. The jokes are often silly but everyone has a great laugh. The last item is a paper crown. It is such a funny site to see everyone, adults and children alike, sitting around the table with a colourful paper crown on.
Christmas day evening. Oh, this is the time of relaxation. Having eaten their fill and played with all their exciting new prezzies, the evening is spent watching sports shows or movies. Reading all the Christmas cards acquired during the season is also a favourite of many families.
This is also a time to tuck into all the leftovers from the Christmas meal. A favourite in our home and in many homes across the country is the Traditional Sloppy Sandwich. The Sloppy Sandwich is made with a heavy bread roll, mayo, thinly sliced turkey, and loads of turkey gravy. Sometimes you can eat this sandwich with your hands, other times you must use a knife and fork to keep it from getting too messy.
